Grammar Note · Past Simple vs Past Perfect

1. Past Simple for sequence: We use the past simple to list completed actions in order. "He knocked. The owner said... The guy went back." Each action finished before the next started.

2. Past Perfect for earlier background: The dog says "I learnt after a rough childhood." The rough childhood happened before he learnt to talk. In British English, we often use past simple here in speech, but past perfect "I had had a rough childhood" would emphasise that it came first.
