Two mischievous espiègles / malicieux little boys were always getting into trouble. Their mother decided that something had to be done, so she sent them to the local clergyman ecclésiastique .
The clergyman was a big man with a booming voice voix forte et retentissante . He sat the younger boy down in front of him and asked in a very serious voice, "Where is God?"
The boy's mouth dropped open, but he said nothing. The clergyman asked again, a little louder: "Where is God?" Still no answer. Then the clergyman leaned forward se pencha en avant and thundered tonna : "WHERE IS GOD?"
The little boy jumped up, ran home as fast as he could, and hid in the closet placard / armoire . When his older brother found him, he asked, "What happened?" The younger boy took a breath prit une respiration and whispered, "God is missing — and they think we are behind it responsables / derrière tout ça !"

The whole story is told in the past simple because every action is finished:
- sent, sat, asked, leaned, thundered, ran, hid, found, took
