📖 Grammar Points

1. Present simple for general observations
Many of these one-liners use the present simple to express habits, attitudes or supposed general truths: “Africa is not a country”, “A man only knows what you tell him” and “In France we have lunch.” The tense makes the observation sound broad and timeless.

2. “Used to” for a past habit
“I used to do drugs” normally means that the habit has stopped. Mitch Hedberg immediately overturns that expectation with “I still do”, then repeats “I used to” in its literal sense: the past statement remains true even though the habit continues.

🔁 Synonyms & Alternatives
tough · difficult / hard / demanding
DIFFICILE → also "éprouvant"
mad · angry / annoyed / furious
FÂCHÉ → also "en colère"

In these jokes, tough means difficult rather than physically strong, while mad means angry rather than mentally ill.

💬 Mini Dialogue

Context: Two friends, Thabo and Lerato, are discussing which one-liner works best in English.

Thabo: “I like Trevor Noah’s joke about the right to remain silentGARDER LE SILENCE.”
Lerato: “The wording is clever. Having a right does not mean having the ability.”
Thabo: “Steven Wright’s joke is clever too. Spot removerDÉTACHANT removes Spot—the dog.”
Lerato: “That one would be difficult to translate because the double meaning disappears.”

Uses the present simple to discuss humour and explain how wordplay functions.
