pope story

One day, the Pope is visiting America and is being driven around Washington DC in his limo when he gets an idea.

"Driver," he says, "can I drive for a while?"

"Of course," says the driver. [How can you say 'no' to the Pope?]

So the Pope starts driving like a maniac all over town, going in and out of traffic, doing 110 km/h.

Soon a cop pulls him over. But when the Pope rolls down the window, the cop stops dead in his tracks, and goes back to the car.

"We have somebody really, really important here," he says to his partner.

"Who is it? Is it a senator?"

"No. Much more important."

"The president?"
"No. More important."

"Okay, an ambassador? Who?"

"I don't know him. But the Pope is his driver."

what the boss said

𝔸n employee is getting to know her new co-workers when the topic of her last job comes up.

"Why did you leave that job?" asked one co-worker.

"It was something my boss said," she replied.

"What did he say?" the co-worker asked.

"You're fired."

You're fired! Here are a few other verbs used to express this unfortunate event: to dismiss, to axe, to sack, to terminate, to pink slip, to lay off, etc.

something nice

This couple is invited to the White House for dinner. They're both very excited, and they spend a lot of time getting ready. When the presidential limousine arrives to take them to the dinner-party, they're ready.

In the lift going down, the woman says: "I spent a lot of time on my clothes and on my make-up, please say something nice.

The man looks at her and says: "Something nice".

Remember not to make the common mistake that many make... of using the verb "pass" to speak about time spent doing something. It is true that time passes, but you don't pass time doing something... you spend time doing something.
